Final Project for Introduction to User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) Design Course

Emily Carr University / Ontario College of Art & Design University

Concept for an app to solve the issue of the time it takes to make dinner. Research for this project included:

  • A total of 9 interviews

  • Analyzed interview data using affinity charting to define a problem statement

  • Completed a heuristic evaluation of Save-on-Foods App Research

  • User testing and feedback

Problem Statement

Help people living in the Metro Vancouver area who cook for their household save time making dinner.

Solution

The app is like Save-on-Foods and Instacart but primarily for people living in the Metro Vancouver area who love to cook, solve the issue of time spent on washing and preparing fresh food needed to make dinner. There are many apps that target this problem, such as Skip the Dishes and Door Dash. There are also meal kit programs such as Hello Fresh and Goodfood. When I asked interviewees about these, they felt the meal kit programs were very pricey and wasteful. Some interviewees didn’t like the set meals as they didn’t fit with their diets. The feedback I got on Skip the Dishes and Door Dash is that they are for ‘cheat meals,’ not everyday healthy eating.

The app idea takes the prep work out of home cooking to allow users to focus on the fun part, cooking! A bonus, without washing and preparing all the ingredients, the user has fewer dirty dishes. Foods that would be available on the app include fresh vegetables, fruit, marinated meats, seafood, dairy, and herbs and spices.

Persona: Carly Davis

“There are not enough hours in the day”
Location: Burnaby, BC | Occupation: Registered Nurse | Age: 32

Bio: Carly has lived in the Metro Vancouver area her whole life. She’s naturally an outdoorsy person and feels very lucky to live in such a beautiful city.

Carly is newly married and recently bought a condo with her husband. With the added stress of the pandemic and the move, she finds her days packed full. Life has always been busy for Carly. She wishes she could find the time to prioritize eating healthy as the bad habits she’s developed are catching up to her.

Goals: Carly would like to be able to spend more time cooking. She wants to stick to a healthy meal plan that incorporates cooked fresh vegetables in her diet.

Challenges: Carly has always loved cooking, but her demanding job doesn’t leave her enough time or energy to cook. Carly doesn’t get enough vegetables in her diet because she doesn’t have the time to wash, prep, cook, and clean-up.

Work-around: Often, Carly resorts to quick solutions like cold dinners or simple meals like an egg on toast. Occasionally, she’ll resort to things like popcorn or takeout. She’s tried some of the meal kit options available but doesn’t like the waste. She also wants to have more control over her meals.
